The Xayaburi Hydroelectric Power Project

Posted 27/02/58

The Xayaburi Hydroelectric Power Project is being built using the run-of-river concept. The total outflow of water that goes through the power plant equals the inflow of water, and no water is stored or channeled away from the Mekong River. Thus the water volume upstream and downstream is naturally maintained. As no large reservoir is created as in storage type plants with high dams, the run-of-river barrage will only slightly raise the water level to the peak water level occur during the rainy season, thus affecting just an area along the course of river bank forming the river pondage surface area of only 49 sq.km. Downstream of the barrage, the water will remain at its natural level. The concrete barrage is 820 metres in length with a rated net head of 28.5 metres.
