Background

Rapid economic development in the Mekong Sub-region has caused a constant increase in the demand for electricity. If this vigorous economic growth is to continue, it is important that the region works together to ensure a reliable supply of electricity at the appropriate cost. Lao PDR is endowed with natural resources especially the significant hydroelectricity potential of 26,000 MW which is a great asset to strengthen Laos position as a regional energy hub. Considering these regional needs and the optimization of the energy resources in the region in December 2007, Thailand and Laos signed their latest MOU to supply electricity up to 7,000 MW to Thailand by 2020.
